Christine Nkirote (13) Salesio Mureti (12 years), Mercy Karambu (7), Samuel Munene (5) and Basilio Mbuba (4)

Age: 4-13 years
Gender: 2 girls and 3 boys
This is the family of a young, mentally challenged mother. Only one of these 5 children (Christine) has been able to attend school (sponsored by a local church), and all live a hand-to-mouth existence: working daily collecting and selling firewood, or begging to earn enough to eat at night.
They have been sleeping on the floor with planks of raw wood as their bed until the Hakuna Matata Project has been able to arrange for the donation of some clothing and food for the new year (2013), as well as two basic beds and some blankets.

Brian Wangaru and Kevin Ndirangu
These are two boys: Brian Wangaru (aged 8 years) and Kevin Ndirangu (aged 7 years). They live with their aged grandmother. After their father died the boys and their mother were taken in by relatives. A few months later their mother left them to look for work, and has now been away for a long time. The kids were eventually kicked out by the relatives, and with no inheritance and no resources, they dropped out of school and started working as child labourers. Their grandmother, with the support of some well-wishers in the community, raised a little money to get them back to school for a term. This contribution has been very irregular, however, and the boys get kicked out of school frequently.
